Europe Day, observed on May 9 each year, celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical ‘Schuman declaration’. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe. This time, 68 years later and at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Doha European Business Councils commemorate this day.
Chairman of Dutch Business Council, Mr. Robert Cats welcomed all the guests from nations among the Union and remembered the values of it. Then, the Ambassador of Bulgaria and local EU Presidency Metin Kazak, addressed the audience emphasizing the importance of collaboration across the European member states. Finally HE Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dr Bahia Tahzib-Lie, kept highlighting previous ideas and remarked the importance to continue to strengthen the ties between Qatar and Europe. After exposing how paramount human rights are she introduced HoutanHomayounpour, head of the new International Labor Office in Doha. The ILO inaugurates his on April the 30th.
After the speeches there were some activities for the attendees, for instance they could participate in a quiz with their mobile phones dedicated to Europe. Among other things we were all surprise finding out that the biggest cheese exporter in Europe is Germany.
